Online therapy, also known as telemental health or telehealth, is a growing field. The delivery of mental health care services is provided through the use of interactive audio, video, email, and chat technology, permitting real-time communication between client and therapist, for the purpose of diagnosis, consultation, and/or treatment.
Telemental health may be useful for individuals who cannot leave their home, work unconventional hours, have transportation issues, cannot leave work for in-person appointments, or live in rural/remote areas without mental health provider access. It also provides a way to continue therapy in the case of illness or virus outbreak (such as COVID-19). In addition, it opens access to specialists who may not be local.
